I am a freelance orchestral principal and chamber musician with over 20 years of teaching experience in the USA and Europe.
As a teacher, I aim to convince my students and help make them convincing, to facilitate growth and foster musical creativity. Whether you are looking to establish a career or just want to learn the viola for your own enjoyment, my first priority in teaching is that you truly understand, not just copy, what is being taught. The viola is a unique instrument with its own technique and language, and my goal is to help discover and support each student's individual voice in a productive and sustainable way. I will always ask 'why' and aid in finding answers, so that you can also teach yourself and make private practice just as productive as our lessons themselves. My experiences with Alexander Technique and other methods will also be helpful in ensuring that the physical aspects of playing the viola do not result in injury.
I have experience in the full spectrum of viola literature - to be an informed musician, I believe that exposure to different styles and techniques is crucial, and as such I have worked to learn from all genres, in the classical world and beyond, to be a flexible and well-rounded advocate for our instrument. As a result, I can teach to solo repertoire in the classical, baroque, and contemporary realms, as well as orchestral repertoire, from symphonic to opera. Such knowledge offers a flexibility to survive in this career, regardless of where you find a job. I also offer 20 years of experience as a chamber musician, and delight in coaching both professional and amateur groups.
About my own training: I studied at Yale University and the Yale School of Music, and attended Verbier, Schleswig-Holstein, Tanglewood, Round Top, Luzern, and Aspen Summer Festivals as a student, as well as several masterclasses in the US and Europe. My studies concluded as a Fellow in the New World Symphony in Miami.
