I was the BBC Young Musician of the Year Finalist in 2016 and would like to help you with your horn playing!

For the last four years, I have been studying with Radek Baborak in Berlin and have been greatly inspired by his way of teaching; focusing on natural phrasing, quality of sound and overall conceptions of works. It's my belief that this approach to horn playing is very natural and I hugely enjoy teaching in this way. I have recently given masterclasses at the Guildhall School of Music in London and the Royal Welsh College of Music in Cardiff.

I'm particularly keen to help you and discuss with you your practise regime, approach to contemporary pieces and to talk about sound quality and technical difficulties.

BIOGRAPHY

At the age of 18 Ben was a Concerto Finalist in the BBC Young Musician Competition, where he performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican.

Highlights since then include his debut at the BBC Proms in 2018 (commissioning a new work by David Bruce for four soloists and orchestra), appearances as soloist with the Lucerne Symphony, Britten Sinfonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, Manchester Camerata, the Prague Philharmonia and Sinfonie Orchester Berlin at the Berlin Philharmonie. Ben has worked as a soloist with conductors such as Sir Mark Elder, James Gaffigan, Nicholas Collon, Mark Wigglesworth, Kristiina Poska, Radek Baborak , Andrew Gourlay and Jessica Cottis.

In 2018 his debut album was released to critical acclaim, and he was selected as a BBC Music Magazine Rising Star and Gramophone Magazine One to Watch. Other notable releases include the world premiere recording of Erika Fox’s “Quasi Una Cadenza” for NMC records and the solo horn call from Wagner’s Siegfried with the Halle Orchestra. He was selected for representation by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) in 2019.

A committed chamber musician, Ben has performed at the Verbier Festival, Festival Barenboim in Buenos Aires, the Salzburg Festival, Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival, the Intonations Festival in Berlin and at the Wigmore Hall, London. Recent chamber music partners have included Daniel Barenboim, Martha Argerich, Sergei Babayan, Elena Bashkirova, Sunwook Kim, Clara Jumi-Kang and Michael Volle.

This season Ben makes his debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Mozart Players and the Mozarteum Orchestra in the Mozartwoche Festival (Salzburg). He returns to give a solo recital at the Pierre Boulez Saal as well as an all Ligeti concert under Francois Xavier-Roth and takes part in the Vinterfest in Sweden. He continues to give recitals throughout the UK.

In February 2018, Ben formed a horn trio with pianist Richard Uttley and violinist Callum Smart. As keen advocates of new music and of developing the genres repertoire, their launch concert at the Conway Hall saw the world premiere of Geoffrey Gordon’s THORN which was written for them.

In demand as guest principal Ben has appeared with the Staatskapelle Berlin, West-Eastern Divan, English Chamber and Philharmonia Orchestras.

Born in 1997 in London, Ben is currently studying at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin with Radek Baborák (ex-principal Berlin Philharmonic). Prior to this he attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department with Susan Dent.

Ben is a patron for the charity Music4People and has given masterclasses at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
