Principal bassoon Turku Philharmonic Orchestra
Member of Esbjerg Ensemble since 2009. It is interesting to know that the bassoon was invented for a very specific purpose: at the time there were no woodwind instruments with tenor and bass range that could duplicate the low strings. The flute and oboe had long been in existence, but there was no low woodwind instrument. I especially enjoy the tenor range for its richness and intensity. The bassoon is the great singing voice of wind instruments.
Etienne Boudreault began his studies with Richard Gagnon at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec in Saguenay. He continued his studies at Indiana University with Professor Kim Walker and the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Geneva where he received the awards 1er prix de Virtuosité avec dinstinctions under Professor Roger Birnstingl and post-Virtuosité by Professor Daniele Damiano. He has also participated in masterclasses under Milan Turkovic, Mordechai Rechtman and Christopher Millard. As a 17 year old, Etienne was Grand Award Winner at the Canadian Music Competitions (CMC) in the wind instrument category. In addition, he was Grand Award Winner in all categories at the National Music Festival of Canada in 1997.
Etienne has frequently participated in European chamber music festivals, both as a musician and as a lecturer: Kuhmo International Chamber Music Festival, Storioni Festival, Accademia delle Crete Sinesi, Mozart Festival (Belgium), Kuru Fest, Korsholm Music Festival. As a soloist, Etienne Boudreault has performed in many different orchestras, l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and South Jutland Symphony Orchestra, to name but a few. Etienne has also performed with many famous musicians including Peter Frankl, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Pascal Moragues, Michel Lethiec, Janne Thomsen, Francis Orval, Nicholas Daniel, Hervé Joulain, Finghin Collins, Henri Sigfridsson and Jacques Zoon. He has also worked closely with jazz musician Carsten Dahl, who composed Don't speak, don't talk, don't hear for him. In early 2015, a new piece for bassoon and percussion written for Etienne Boudreault and Christian Martinez by Peter Bruun will be premiered.
In 2000 Etienne Boudreault was employed as solo bassoonist at the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 2004. He was also one of the founders of Ensemble MidtVest.
Since January 2017, Etienne is the Principal bassoonist of Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in Finland.
