I am solo Flute of the Neues Orchester Basel and of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. Flute professor at Centro Superior Katarina Gurska

I love teaching because it is the best way I find to keep learning: about the flute, music and myself. This process of learning is what I think every musician should keep through their musical life, because it is what keeps a musician motivated and improving constantly.

Also, I think that when I teach I am using all my abilities in an effort that is what makes everything have a sense for me: transmitting an information, a message, a passion, an idea, a feeling to another person. When playing (with orchestra or chamber music) this feeling is very intense and the message is transmitted through the musical language but I love the combination that teaching offers between playing and a more intellectual and empathic work.

When teaching I can experience the incredible strength of the musical language combined with all other humanistic areas, and that makes it simply a passion for me.

My methodology focuses on finding always an stable, constructive and clear start point: everyone has always something that can be easily done (a register that sounds amazing without any effort, a very personal and nice way of phrasing, a single note full of quality, a very interesting philosophical approach or an attitude towards an excerpt or a musical character that is very suitable). Then, I try to make the student understand and internalize how to apply this to everything else: how to make the same kind of sound in all other registers finding a relaxed feeling, how to apply this nice phrasing feeling to other musical phrases, how to make all the other notes more similar to that full-quality single one, etc.
This is what I can offer and so far, it has given very good results with my students -having all of them a personal and different starting point-.

I think there is no better teacher than our own ears: I want to "open" the student's ears so they can hear themselves properly (this means not being over self-critical also) and know what they have to do in order to have the same relaxed and secure feeling when playing the instrument so that they can sing and not play the flute. Flute is not the important thing, it is just the tool (instrument) we take to do music, so its technique should be as internalized as possible.
