Jay Attys

I am a jazz vocalist with 10 years of performance experience. I am passionate about all things jazz. Theory, performance and piano!

Jay Attys began his journey in East Orange, New Jersey where Lauryn Hill and Whitney Houston got their starts. He received his B.A in Music at Duke University and is currently pursuing an M.M. in Jazz Studies at North Carolina Central University in Vocal Jazz performance. At NCCU, Jay is a member of the award winning Vocal Jazz ensemble. His studies and performances have taken him across the globe and put him in the company of performers such as Branford and Delfeyo Marsalis, Bobby McFerrin, Leslie Odum Jr. and Nate Smith. His style can be described as a fusion of Classical, Jazz, Soul, RnB and Gospel.

Jay has a deep passion for the convergence of theory and performance because he believes that "understanding the theoretical reasons behind musical decisions opens up vast realms of experimentation and creativity". Consequently, Jay's teaching style revolves around the marriage of music theory and performance, so that his students can learn how to build on the foundation that has been laid by the musicians who have come before us.

Jay believes that it is the educator's duty to understand that due to varying circumstances, everyone that they have the privilege of teaching is not on the same level. A seasoned educator must be able to tailor their teaching to the learning style and needs of each student. As a music educator, he has the critical task that will enable a student to succeed in all academic disciplines. As long as the student is willing to learn, there is no obstacle that can't be overcome!
