Originally from New Zealand, Julia Grenfell has been Principal Piccolo of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra since 2001. Previous to that, Julia spent five years studying and working in the United States. She gained a Master of Music at Northwestern University in Chicago, studying with Walfrid Kujala, longtime Piccoloist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Julia then began a Doctor of Musical Arts in Flute Performance at Rice University in Houston, studying with Leone Buyse, which she completed in 2003. Show Full Profile
In between her studies, Julia has held one-year positions with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Wellington, and the San Antonio Symphony in San Antonio, Texas. Summer music festival participation includes the UBS Verbier Festival International Youth Orchestra in Verbier, Switzerland; Tanglewood festival in Massachusetts; National Repertory Orchestra in Colorado; and Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California.
In her travels Julia has had the opportunity to work with some great conductors including James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Claudio Abbado, and Wolfgang Sawallisch.
