Julian Brown

Julian Brown is concertmaster of several orchestras in the San Francisco Bay Area and has many years of teaching experience at all levels.

Julian Brown has lifelong experience of playing solo, chamber and orchestral music. Born in the UK, he began the violin at the age of 8 and subsequently studied for six years with violinist, Anthony Saltmarsh. After immigrating to the US in 1998, he has worked with many orchestras and chamber groups in the San Francisco Bay Area frequently appearing as concertmaster and/or soloist. He is currently concertmaster of the California Pops Orchestra and the Cal Arte Chamber Orchestra, and has previously served as concertmaster of the Palo Alto Philharmonic, Cambrian Symphony, Saratoga Symphony, Winchester Orchestra and Silicon Valley Symphony. In the last few years he appeared as soloist in orchestral performances of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, Spohr’s Violin Concerto No. 7, Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, and other shorter solo works including movie music such as Schindler’s List and Cinema Paradiso. As co-director of the Cal Arte Ensemble he has also performed in many chamber concerts playing all 10 of Beethoven’s Sonatas for Violin & Piano, and many piano trios, quartets and quintets.

In recent years, Julian has been teaching violin students of all ages and last year was invited to conduct violin masterclasses for Vantage Academy of Music of Hong Kong for preparation of students presenting a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York. Besides his roles as performer and teacher, Julian has previous experience as a writer and broadcaster and he regularly contributes program notes for Bay Area concerts.
