Principal Flute @ Maggio Musicale Fiorentino/Opera di Firenze
+ Orchestra Mozart
+ Trial Principal Philharmonia Orchestra
Teaching is really a fantastic experience for me, and I do it with a lot of passion, like everything concerning music: it would be a pleasure to share with you my knowledges and skills about sound technique, expression, intonation and dynamics, as well breathing, support and posture, so important to play efficiently our instrument…and of course about MUSIC! solo repertoire, chamber music, orchestral excerpts, orchestral repertoire from the big symphonic and the chamber orchestra highlights, without forgetting the beautiful opera literature!
Some infos about me:
I was born on the beautiful Como Lake (Italy) and I began at the age of 7 to play the flute in the Conservatory of my city with G. Mascheretti and V. Gallo, both so important for my first education. Later I have studied with Janos Balint in Detmold, with Jacques Zoon in Geneva, and privatly with Aurele Nicolet and Emmanuel Pahud.
In 2005 I met one of the most important and inspiring figures in my life, Claudio Abbado, and I had the privilege to play with him for 10 years in Orchestra Mozart and Lucerne Festival Orchestra. After playing as first flute and living one of the best musical experiences with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra (from 2006 to 2008), I’ve played as Principal Flute with SWR Symphonieorchester, Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, Bamberger Symphoniker, Bergen Philharmonic, BBC Symphony of Wales, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Symphonica Toscanini, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Camerata Salzburg, Malaysian Philharmonic, etc... under the baton of great masters such as Blomstedt, Chung, Haitink, Harding, Gatti, Jarvi, V. Jurowski, Kuhn, Maazel, Masur, Nelsons, Salonen...
My great experience in Orchestra Mozart is still going on, in the last few seasons with Bernard Haitink, now with Daniele Gatti, and I am currently Principal Flute in the Tyrolean Festival Orchestra (Austria).
Since October 2021 I am Principal Flute at the Opera House of Florence, world known as "Maggio Musicale Fiorentino", under the baton of Zubin Mehta and Daniele Gatti.
I love to perform as a soloist or in flute recitals, and I am very lucky to play a lot of chamber music with fantastic musicians.
In 2014 I was a finalist and the 4th Prize in the Aurele Nicolet International Flute Competition, held in Guangzou, China.
As I already told you, I love teaching, and I have the luck to held masterclasses all over the world, in Italy, Germany, China, Spain, Slovakia and Middle East, and I am Flute Professor in the Music University of Livorno (Italy).
I speak fluently German, English and Spanish.... and I am learning a bit of French!
Looking forward to meeting you in my lessons!
All the best, Mattia
I found Mattia’s lesson very inspiring, I can still remember after many years when he talked about how he was finding his best sound with the lights off, in the dark: I tried and it worked because you are really just focusing on hearing yourself.
I had the pleasure to follow masterclasses and lectures of Prof. Mattia Petrilli in the last years. Each time I found a strong inspiration and motivation to work hard. In particular I was impressed by his idea about the sound, deeply connected with the body equilibrium. Moreover I prepared with him important auditions and competitions. Thanks to his long experience in orchestra I received valuable suggestions and learnings where it has always been considered the stylistic esthetic of the piece.
Simply fantastic! Mattia Petrilli express always very precise, constructive and honest comments, he shares completely his experience and knowledge, he is well prepared on the entire flute repertoire, and I find him a great teacher because of his great capacity of observation and experimentation (first on his own). He takes care about all the aspects in a performance: instrumental technique, posture, expression. He always suggests different ways of possible and justified interpretation, never imposing his one, letting the student free to propose new ideas and develop a personal taste. A great musician and an exceptional human being.
Mattia Petrilli is not just a very good musician and flutist, but also an excellent teacher and a very enjoyable and interesting person to work with, thanks to the professional way used to lead the class. I hope to have the possibility to work with him in the future because with his passion, his friendliness, his skills and with his desire to share all his knowledge, he let me improve my skills as musician.
