Max Tan

Freelancing soloist, chamber musician, entrepreneur. Current Doctoral candidate and faculty assistant at Juilliard, member of Sarasota Orchestra

As a pre-med student in undergraduate studies, my approach to music and violin performance is influenced by my research experience in the sciences. I believe in teaching students the tools they need to better express their musical vision - teaching technique, interpretation, and deeper understanding of physics and philosophy that informs the performance and listening experience of music. I teach students so they can be self-sufficient in their musical discovery, and the tools they learn in approaching music and the violin can be applied to any musical work. The dialogue is a circular relationship in which we inspire each to discover joy in the music-making process and maintain perspective, engaging in detailed work while not losing the big picture.

My love of music has been greatly influenced by my teachers - Donald Weilerstein and Catherine Cho, as well as previous mentors who include Itzhak Perlman, Albert Markov, and Lynn Chang. I have a deep love of chamber music, and my musical understanding and philosophy has been shaped by others such as Andras Keller, Miriam Fried, Seth Knopp, members of the Juilliard, Tokyo, Guarneri, Cleveland, and Parker string quartets. I've also had the great fortune to take masterclasses with the concertmasters and orchestra members of the Vienna, Berlin, and New York Philharmonic orchestras.

I have extensive performance experience in various venues and contexts from competitions and large stages as a semifinalist in the 2019 Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition and first-prize winner of the Hudson Valley International Strings Competition, featured on the radio broadcasts of WQXR/WNYC, Canvas and Musiq3 in Belgium, to smaller intimate performance spaces such as house concerts like Schubertiades, performance-lectures in TED-like talks and audience engagement in schools, art galleries with painters, and at Harvard museums bridging music and medicine.

I have performed in important concert halls all over the world, including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall (New York), Symphony Hall (Boston), Jordan Hall (Boston), Berlin Philharmonie, KKL Luzern (Lucerne), Dvorak Hall (Prague), Helsinki Music Center, Shanghai Oriental Arts Center.
