Mindfulness is the practicing of bringing one's attention to the present moment, non-judgmentally. Piano playing can add value to one's life.
My teaching philosophy follows the principles of the holistic education, which concerns with the development of every person’s artistic, creative, intellectual, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual potentials. I believe that each person should strive to be all that they can be in life and that each one must try to achieve harmony between the inner life and outer life. In the case of playing an instrument, the sounds one produces mirror their inner state. By working on one’ sound quality we may change the person’s well being. And because creativity comes with freedom, I make sure my lessons happened in an ambient of trust, concentration and easiness.
From teaching piano to pre-schoolers with the Suzuki Method I have learned a great deal about teaching by ear, encouraging full expression and feeling for the music, as well as forming an inner musical imagination. We also learn to solve complicated problems by deconstructing it and we practice musical listening awareness. The Suzuki Method has given me several precious tools to use with all age pupils and my own playing.
Very important when learning the piano is the approach towards technic. I like to think that not fingers, but the whole body plays the piano and not the intellect, but ears control our playing.
I value the memorization of pieces as I encourage improvisation from the beginning. Harmony and ear training are important parts of my method and ear training was the subject of my Master Program at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg.
Teaching music has been a fantastic challenge and I am so grateful for the students who have taught me to be a better teacher. Learning to play the piano is like an exploration game that never ends. It has been an enormous source of enjoyment and discovery in my life. It has also allowed me to travel and move countries so many times. It’s Zen and exiting at the same time. It can bring people to the present moment, therefore adding value to their lives.
Many times when a person comes to me with the wish to play the piano, there is much more than the desire to make music with shiny black & white keys. There are dreams all shapes and sizes. Each individual story and dream may never come up entirely over the lessons, but these are materials from what humans are made. I am glad when I am chosen to be part of it.
Roberta´s lessons were always interesting for me, for they are exciting, challenging and never stereotype, musically as well as personally. I think this is her special gift. She can hear someone in his piano playing and teaches him to listen to himself.
When I came to Roberta, 6 months ago, I couldn’t play anything at the piano. I tried to learn by myself, since I can read music, but it didn’t really work. So at my 53rd birthday I finally started with piano classes, which was something I wanted to do for a long time. With a lot of patience and flexibility Roberta promoted an environment of concentration with attention on what you're doing, one thing at the time. So I started focus on myself. Musically I feel I have improved very quickly, because I'm already playing songs that I never dreamed I could learn so fast. I like what I am playing and even the exercises sound nice. I find it very good that she corrects hands' position and shows me clearly how to create the movement to get the best sound. She listens all the time to the quality of what I play and I think the technique is all based on it.
