Music Director of Waterperry Opera Festival, Assistant Conductor of Colorado Symphony, and prize-winning composer
As a conductor I believe that a deep musical understanding of the score is essential for giving a compelling performance of any work. I was trained in the Ilya Musin school of conducting, and aim to help students develop their physical conducting gestures in conjunction with unlocking their musical and artistic responses to the score.
It is crucial to develop a sense of freedom and adventure as a composer, and when teaching composition I strive always to get students to understand there is no such thing as a 'wrong note', but to encourage them to be bold and express their ideas as clearly and convincingly as possible.
A solid technique and understanding of instruments and voices is of course also essential for a composer, and when teaching I foster a blend of technical study as well as always retaining a sense of play and freedom in composition.
Music theory doesn't need to be a dull or arduous thing to study, and I have many years of experience of helping students learn and develop quickly while also enjoying the subject!
