Hello!
I am the clarinet teacher at the Montréal Conservatoire and I also have a few students at McGill University! Welcome to all!
A much sought-after performer on the Quebec music scene, Jean-François Normand is currently clarinet teacher at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal and McGill University in addition to the Domaine Forget Music Academy. Mr. Normand holds degrees from both University of Montreal and the Juilliard School of Music.
Soloist with several orchestras, including the Montreal, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Toronto, Texarkanas Symphony Orchestras and the Montreal Metropolitan Orchestra, his interpretation of the Mozart Concerto has been praised by the press: “completely natural playing, flawless technique, supple phrasing, beautiful and controlled tone quality, intonation, style, and imaginative use of improvised ornamentation” (Claude Gingras, La Presse). He performed this same concerto in 2005 with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra in Bratislava where it was broadcast to over 16 European countries. He is also frequently heard on Radio-Canada/CBC.
In 2010, Jean-François Normand entered the world of historical performance on period instruments. He recorded a CD for Atma dedicated to the French composer Mehul, along with oboist Washington McClain and bassoonist Mathieu Lussier. His next concerts will take him to Toronto where he will be joining Tafelmusik for a series of concerts in May.
Jean-François Normand, simply said, has been one of the most important people in my musical life. Not only is he an exceptional clarinetist, he possesses a rare wisdom in his artistry, and is a truly gifted teacher. I have grown so much during my time studying with him and I am proud to have had him as one of my main teachers, as he gave me all the tools to become a successful clarinetist, while respecting my personal artistic initiative, and without imposing a strict philosophy of sound or aesthetic of playing. He helped me become a better version of myself! I do not hesitate to recommend him as a teacher.
Jean-François is a great clarinet teacher! Very attentive and delicate, he is a logical and pragmatic teacher with a beautiful sound and a great ability to transmit his knowledge. For having studied with him myself, I would recommend him to anybody who is serious about learning the clarinet at a high artistic level
An extraordinary teacher with whom I have had the pleasure of working with. With the advice and knowledge he gave me I developed my own musical instincts and was able to solve problems I had with technique, phrasing, sound and musicality. I give him my highest recommerdation as a teacher for all levels of clarinetists.
