I'm the Principal Viola with the Metropolitan Opera and teach at Mannes School of Music in New York and perform internationally.
I have performed as soloist and chamber musician worldwide, and have been a member or Principal of some of the world's finest orchestras, such as the Royal Concertgebouw and Metropolitan Opera. I have been teaching for over ten years, including as a lecturer at Indiana University on multiple occasions. My solo viola CD "Sonata-Song", published on Delos Music, was reviewed by Strad magazine as "most recommendable", "nothing but praise", with the recording of A. Khatchaturian's solo sonata described as "definitive".
The most important thing for me as a teacher is to find the right approach for each individual student, as I do not believe it is enough to merely offer solutions. The teacher must find the best way to impart this information to the student. Everyone is different and it's the teacher's responsibility to ask - where is this student coming from? What are their strengths and weaknesses? How do they learn and listen?
I enjoy teaching solo repertoire of all kinds and levels, but especially like working on orchestral excerpts, which I believe need to be treated as compelling, artistic statements in order to succeed.
I briefly worked with Milan to prepare for an important opera audition and gained so much invaluable insight in our time together. He helped me truly and honestly focus on what mattered most, from tactile things on the instrument to musical interpretation at it's highest level to my inner head game. He offered both short-term and long-term things to work on, and inspired me to strive for 110% musicality all of the time. I would definitely work with him again.
