Hi there! My name is Ian and I’m an oboist originally from Chicago. For the past 13 years I have studied and freelanced as an oboist in Montreal, Paris and Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Best to describe myself is curious and enthusiastic for new connections. Classical music and playing the oboe have always served as a way to travel and connect with musicians and non-musicians throughout my life, to the point where I feel like a global musician/citizen.
The oboe is an interesting case when comes to styles and conventions, where unlike other (wind) instruments, people like to label or identify themselves and others through a national style, be it American, German, French, Scandinavian, etc. However, I think it’s increasingly the case that these labels matter less and less, and that’s a good thing! I have met many teachers and done many masterclasses and can only say what I think the oboe should sound like, and that is you. I have made a transition from American style reeds to a French-German reed fusion, through which I am told my style is European but maybe American. Through my experiences living abroad and exchanging with so many oboists, I am excited when teaching and passionate to make the oboe the most pleasant experience it can be for anyone interested in playing it. And if you have been playing for a while and are curious to learn it from a different angle, I’m sure I can help with a few key things such as more consistent reed-making, cane help, achieving a round and focused sound, and the ability to play your oboe longer with ease.
